“People are kind of always ready to laugh,” says producer Seth MacFarlane (Ted, Family Guy) in The Naked Gun featurette. “Growing up, I loved The Naked Gun [starring Leslie Nielsen]. This kind of broad, absurdist comedy would transcend all age groups.”
In The Naked Gun, Liam Neeson plays Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., son of Lt. Frank Drebin (famously played by Leslie Nielsen) and the only man who has the particular set of skills to lead Police Squad and save the world.
In this first-look featurette, the movie will take you back to the kind of comedy reminiscent of the 90s that brought out cheers and laughter. The absurd moments and gags that are not too common these days. In fact, these kinds of bits have a very low chance of landing in this modern times unless carried out by truly skilled and talented individuals.
In the case of The Naked Gun, that kind of comedy transcends all age groups. As seen in the featurette, some classic gags can still elicit laughter, even those that are borderline silly – like the scene where Debrin asked Pamela Anderson’s character to “take a seat” and she literally takes a chair and drags it out of the office – can be hilarious when left to the right hands. Neeson, Anderson, and the rest of the team are definitely the right set of hands for this.
This is Neeson’s first lead role in a comedy movie. He stars alongside Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser. The supporting cast includes CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, with Danny Huston. The movie is directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) and produced by MacFarlane.
