“Rampage” review: dogs are out; gorillas are in

Dogs are out. Gorillas are in. Brad Peyton’s “Rampage” just introduced man’s new best friend.

You can add the latest Dwayne Johnson-starrer in your list of must-see disaster films. Packed with a lot of heart-pumping action, the movie is sure to put you on the edge of your seats from start to finish.

A science experiment gone wrong made one of man’s worst nightmares come true: gigantic creatures that pulverize the city worse than any Avenger combat scenes can.

Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson) is a gorilla whisperer. He’s friends with an uber-smart primate, George, who can sign and has a crazy sense of humor.

An unfortunate accident turned George, and two other animals, into a Godzilla-like monsters that no bullet or missile can take down. Working with Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), a scientist who worked on the DNA-altering strain and CIA agent Russwell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Okoye has to find a way to stop his primate best friend from wreaking havoc.

With no evident solution on the horizon, Okoye has to rely on his wits, sheer stength, and his connection with George to stay alive and, perhaps, save the city.

The movie is filled with heart-pumping action that will guarantee to hold your attention from start to finish. Fast-paced and full of explosive moments, “Rampage” is one good watch.

Disaster films are always fun to watch mainly because there is that element of uncertainty. What is going to happen? Will the world end? Is there a way to stop it? How many will die? Who will die? Which world-famous landmarks are going to meet their end?

In “Rampage” the question is how will our protagonist save the day because, obviously, the monsters will not yield to weaponry. Looking at their size will make you doubt if it’s going to be a happy ending.

That uncertainty will be with you as the movie rolls along, which makes the experience even more fun because, at the back of your mind, while the monsters are tearing down buildings, smashing police cars and helicopters, and rendering high-powered guns useless, you still cling to the hope that Okoye will be able to pull through.

Peyton and Johnson are a good match. Having worked in another disaster movie, “San Andreas,” their chemistry is unmistakable. And it’s probably one of the reasons why the movie works

The movie is pretty straightforward. The motives and intentions are clear from the get-go and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the movie.

Make no mistake about it, “Rampage” lives up to its title. There’s carnage all over, the kind that’s reminiscent of the battle between Superman and General Zod in “Man Of Steel”.
