MOVIE SYNOPSIS
Eternia is calling. The legendary He-Man is back on the big screen in “Masters of the Universe.” Prince Adam has been living as a normal man on Earth for 15 years, separated from his home and his power. The Sword of Power leads him back to Eternia, where he reclaims his birthright as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.
GET TO KNOW PRINCE ADAM or HE-MAN
To escape danger brought upon by Skeletor, Prince Adam was sent to Earth. As an adult, he is stuck in the mundanity of the corporate world, until an old friend from Eternia came knocking to take him back to his home planet.
MEET THE HEROES
Here are the heroes of Eternia who will join forces with the legendary He-Man in his fight against evil.
Teela, played by Camila Mendes, is a former student turned warrior goddess with special insights into the power of Grayskull. Along with her father, Man-At-Arms, they’ve been a force to be reckoned with back in Eternia, ruled by the tyrant Skeletor. “Teela is independent and self-sufficient. She had to grow up fast after her father sort of gave up on life a little bit,” Mendes says. “She had to toughen up and look after herself, in addition to looking after her father. I think she's been hardened by that experience. But deep down, she has this inner sensitivity and really deep empathy.”
Teela’s father, Duncan, a.k.a. Man-At-Arms, is also an important figure in Adam’s past. The powerful warrior served under Adam’s father, King Randor, and currently leads the fight against Skeletor. Idris Elba, who plays Man-At-Arms, has been a longtime fan of Masters of the Universe, and is hoping to pass the magic on to the new generation. “Everyone wanted to be He-Man,” he recalls. “It's a massive slice of nostalgia and just being a part of it as an actor feels like an honor. I've got my son who's young and into it as well. So passing that on, and being in a film that he might want to see feels good.”
He-Man’s other allies are veteran warriors that have existed as memories from his childhood. One of them is the headstrong Ram Man, played by Jon Xue Zhang. “Ram Man is often described as the human battering ram,” Zhang says. “He's got springs for legs. He's very strong and he has a propensity for using his head to resolve problems. It may not be in the most intelligent way, but it's certainly the most direct way.”
Mekaneck, played by James Wilkinson, lengthens his already towering height by his odd, extendable neck. “He had this crazy-bad injury with his neck,” Wilkinson explains. “Man-At-Arms did a bunch of work on him and he then got this superpower of an extendable neck. Now he uses it to protect other people. So he had this tragic accident and then decided to help people.”
Fisto is not actually named that, but young Adam bestowed the nickname upon Malcom due to his prosthetic iron hand. “Fisto and Man-At-Arms, they're brothers. And my character saved his life in battle, but lost an arm in the process. So, Man-At-Arms builds him this fist,” explains Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, who plays Fisto.
Watch these heroes fight against the ultimate evil as Masters of the Universe arrives in Philippine cinemas on June 3.
MEET THE VILLAINS
Get to know the forces of evil in Masters of the Universe.
Leading the pack is the nefarious Skeletor, played by Jared Leto. The filmmakers tapped Jared Leto to voice the iconic villain, with the actor being a massive He-Man fan bringing a solid knowledge of the character into his performance. He understands that as menacing as Skeletor is, there’s still a lot of fun to be had in the role. . “We were shooting a scene and I was laughing so hard that he brought me to tears,” director Travis Knight says of Leto. “He will make these choices that you don't see coming and that really does help to make Skeletor distinctive. He's just an extraordinarily memorable villain.”
Alison Brie plays Evil-Lyn, a cunning enchantress that serves as Skeletor's right-hand.
Jared Leto stars as Skeletor, the iconic villain in Masters of the Universe.
Sam Wilson plays Trap Jaw, the intimidating cyborg.
Evil-Lyn, played by Alison Brie, is a cunning enchantress that serves as Skeletor’s right hand. For Brie, getting into character needed just the right mix of menace and surprisingly, comedy. “I think the most exciting thing to me about this iteration of He-Man is the sense of humor,” Brie says. “Skeletor and Evil-Lyn had a really funny rapport in the original series. Some of the iterations since then have been more serious, and I like that this movie has a meta quality. It's able to laugh at itself, but also deliver for the fans and take itself seriously when it needs to.”
There’s also the turbulent relationship between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor, which can be pretty toxic in Brie’s opinion. “She vacillates between sort of loving Skeletor, and idolizing him, and being very excited for him to get the power, but secretly she wants to have all the power,” Brie says. “She knows how to press his buttons, but she's also there to build him up. She notoriously has no loyalty to Skeletor. She likes to pretend that she does, but we all know the power dynamic between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor is super volatile.”
Another fighter in Skeletor’s roster of villains is the cyborg Trap Jaw, an intimidating mish-mash of parts with an even nastier bite. There is quite a bit of prosthetic work to be a part of Skeletor’s army, and for actor Sam C. Wilson, it’s part of the process of embodying the role. “The way that I play him, he's a really gruesome kind of guy,” Wilson says. “His jaw hurts his head, so he's got a headache and none of it is very comfortable. With the amazing work that the prosthetics team has done, I can make this guy feel eerie and strange.”
