Afi Afrrica The Lookout

Afi Africa’s “The Lookout” is a campy guilty pleasure

Afi Africa’s suspense-thriller-erotic-drama “The Lookout” was very promising from the get-go. It had a unique and interesting premise. Until you see it on the screen.

All that promise turned into confusion. First off, it felt like it didn’t know what it wanted to be. Is it drama? Action? Thriller? Porn?

Lester (Andres Vasquez) is a gay hired killer who is out to exact revenge on those who wronged him. Complications arise when he falls for a guy who turns out to be a double agent.

We all know how movies like this turn out. But getting there was a wild ride. Sometimes I don’t know if I actually found it fun or annoying because the story gets convoluted and confusing a lot of times. There are issues with continuity. And many times you’ll find yourself wondering if you blinked and missed something and then realize that you didn’t.

There were so many elements that there’ll come a point when you can’t help but admire the writer and director for wanting to put as much entertainment into the film. However, they ended up stuffing so much in our throats it starts to make us gag. There was so much going on that the movie became something I believe the filmmakers didn’t intend to: a comedy.

But the laughs will have to end at some point especially when the movie reaches its denouement. Some may love it, others may frown on it. But if you’re purely in it to be entertained, then Afi Africa’s movie is definitely a good choice. Go grab some popcorn.
