Columbia Pictures has just released The Social Reckoning trailer. This new movie from writer-director Aaron Sorkin is the “companion piece” to David Fincher’s 2010 The Social Network.
In the trailer, Jeremy Allen White is Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz who sizes up “that guy” and “this company” who are “playing an unprecedented role in our lives.”
“That guy” is Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong) and “that company” is the social network giant Facebook. The subject of Sorkin’s latest film is the dangerous journey undertaken by a Facebook engineer named Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) when she decided to seek the help of Horwitz to expose the dangerous secrets surrounding the company’s impact on its users’ mental health and its role in the spread of misinformation.
Mikey Madison plays the central character, Frances Haugen. Motivated by a personal reasons after she realizes that the very institution she works for is the one that radicalized her friend.
Despite the love for her work and what she perceives is its noble impact especially on people who take comfort in their online profiles, she makes the decision to help uncover the truth behind what’s really going on.
This is Madison’s first major role since winning Best Actress at the Oscars for her role in Anora.
Jeremy White Allen plays investigative reporter whose eventual series, “The Facebook Files’ becomes the basis of the movie. It ran in 2021 and had tens of thousands of pages of internal documents, including research reports, and online discussions among employees and presentation drafts to senior management—all pointing to findings that say the platform has flaws, and that the company is aware of its negative effects. And that it hasn’t done anything to fix them.
Jeremy Strong takes on Mark Zuckerberg’s character (previously played by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network) after Eisenberg declined. It’s been reported that Sorkin wanted him to reprise his role but the actor didn’t want to be conflated with the Facebook founder anymore.
The Social Reckoning opens in cinemas, October 7.
