Ryan Gosling plays reluctant astronaut in ‘Project Hail Mary’

Ryan Gosling is the world’s last hope in the new sci-fi film from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary.

Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, the movie centers on Ryland Grace (Gosling), a middle school teacher tasked with an impossible task: save the Earth from destruction due to the effects of a dying sun. There’s just one complication, though.

As soon as he wakes up from a coma in the spacecraft, he has no recollection of what he is doing there. He must find ways to deduce the answers and, ultimately, save the planet from dying. But he may not have to do it all by himself, based on the movie’s official trailer.

Based on The Martian author Andy Weir’s New York Times best-selling novel, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller. The film is directed by the creators of the Spider-Verse franchise, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The trailer, released by Columbia Pictures early this week, shows a confused Grace waking up from a spacecraft. A computer-generated voice prompts him to introduce himself to which he responds how he just woke up from a coma. A series of flashbacks show how Grace was tapped by the government to help with a mission to figure out a solution to the planet’s impending fate and then how he manages to survive in outer space, getting closer to the answer he needs.
